LOVE is popping up all over Virginia, and now Smithfield has its own LOVEwork!
Thank you to everyone who braved the cold weather and joined us for our LOVEwork dedication on Wednesday, December 13, including Rita McClenney and Sandra Tanner from Virginia Tourism Corporation, our Mayor Carter Williams, Smithfield Town Manager Peter Stephenson, Smithfield Town Council Member Denise Tynes, Isle of Wight County Administrator Randy Keaton and Assistant County Administrator Don Robertson and Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors Chairman Rex Alphin.
Congratulations to Meagan Pugh, the winner of the LOVEworks Design Contest and especially to our generous sponsors: Beta Sigma Phi – International Women’s Organization – Xi Delta Psi Chapter, Smithfield 2020, Smithfield Center, Target Marketing (Chesterfield, VA), Custom Metal Fabricators (North Chesterfield), and Virginia Tourism Corp (#LOVEVA).
In the spring of 2017, Smithfield & Isle of Wight Tourism sponsored a contest for the creation of our very own LOVEwork. The winning designer was Meagan Pugh, who was awarded a $500 cash prize! With 38 entries, our five judges did not have an easy time! Enjoy the video below to see all 38 entries. Our judges were Judy Winslow, Tourism Director of the Smithfield & Isle of Wight CVB, Jennifer England Williams, Director of the Isle of Wight County Museum, Peter Stephenson, Smithfield Town Manager, Milton Cook, member of the Smithfield Town Council, and Sheila Gwaltney, Director of the Arts Center @ 319.
The winning designer, Meagan Pugh, is a graduate of Smithfield High School, the Governor’s School for the Arts and Virginia Commonwealth University’s Fine Arts Department. Here is Meagan’s description of her design: “Inspired by what we are best known for…Ham, well Bacon, I envision our LOVEwork to be in the “pop art” vein and interactive. Visitors can take photos their friends and family “taking a big bite” out of a slice of bacon (while taking a big bite out of all there is to do in Smithfield). We might even be the world’s largest bacon statue!”
The LOVEworks program is a state-wide branding initiative sponsored by Virginia Tourism Corporation and designed to promote family-friendly vacation experiences in Virginia and the “Virginia is for Lovers” message. It’s easy to see why this message has been the state slogan for more than 45 years, from the coast to the mountains and every small town or unique winery in between, you are bound to find something to fall in love with in Virginia.
Several LOVEworks have been created across the state so far. The LOVEworks have become special places, not only for local communities, but also for travelers. People are drawn to the LOVE letters and choose them as backdrops for special occasions such as engagements, family pictures, new baby pictures and memorable road trips. Further information and images can be found at https://www.virginia.org/love.
We hope you’ll come by to check it out yourself! The LOVEwork, located at the Smithfield Center and take photos there to share using the hashtags: #loveva and #smithfieldlove!
