Chrismon Tree & Ornament Kit Sale
318 Main Street in downtown Smithfield
Saturday & Sunday, December 2 & 3
Bethany United Methodist Church will present a Chrismon Tree and be selling pre-made kits for $5-$15 with instructions to either make there or take home. Proceeds will benefit the 1750 Isle of Wight Courthouse and Bethany United Methodist Church Missions.
The word “Chrismon” comes from “Christ” and “Monosgrams.” The tradition began over 50 years ago by Frances Kipps Spencer of Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, Virginia who wanted to create ornaments that would be appropriate to decorate a tree in her church. Frances designed approximately 40 different Chrismon symbols, traditionally white and gold in color, each with its own meaning.
