The award was presented to Tourism Director, Judy Winslow on Monday, April 3rd at the 2017 Virginia Tourism Symposium in Hot Springs, Virginia for its Smithfield Rocks program.  Established in 2009, the Virgo Awards recognize and celebrate the success of destination marketing organizations along with their respective staff members and volunteers.Additionally, the prestigious Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC) “Trailblazer” Award was presented to Tourism Director, Judy Winslow, on Friday, March 24th at the 2017 Visitor Centers Seminar in Fredericksburg, Virginia -again recognizing the Smithfield Rocks Program. The “Trailblazer Award” was created to recognize certified visitor centers for excellence and creative accomplishment in tourism marketing and promotion, and to foster the development of imaginative and innovative marketing promotion programs and activities.  This award is for a single targeted promotion aimed at increasing awareness and visitation of a locality or region.

Smithfield & Isle of Wight’s Submission, “Smithfield Rocks” is a public relations effort that heavily promotes one merchant, attraction, or restaurant each month through the Tourism website, weekly email blast, blog and multiple social media outlets including Facebook. Smithfield Rocks tells the in-depth story of each entity – their history, their commitment to the community, their passion for what they do – through words and photos.
More good news!
In addition to these two awards, Tourism Director, Judy Winslow and Marketing & Public Relations Manager, Lois Tokarz were recognized at the Tourism Symposium in Hot Springs for completing their VADMO Virginia Destination Professional Certification. This certification is a unique Virginia-centric individual professional certification designed especially for Virginia Travel Professionals. There are two program components, a knowledge component and an experiential component. VADMO is a membership-based association of independent destination management organizations and supporting businesses who share political and community support with the primary mission of promoting their areas as meeting and tourism destinations.
Thanks to all our tourism stakeholders for their continued support for the Smithfield Rocks and other tourism programs!
