Announcing…Smithfield’s LOVEwork Design Contest

LOVE is popping up all over Virginia, and now is your chance to be a part of it!

Smithfield & Isle of Wight Tourism is sponsoring a contest for the creation of our very own LOVEwork. The winning designer will receive a $500 cash prize! The LOVEworks program is a state-wide branding initiative sponsored by Virginia Tourism Corporation and designed to promote family-friendly vacation experiences in Virginia and the “Virginia is for Lovers” message. It’s easy to see why this message has been the state slogan for more than 45 years, from the coast to the mountains and every small town or unique winery in between, you are bound to find something to fall in love with in Virginia.

Several LOVEworks have been created across the state so far. The LOVEworks have become special places, not only for local communities, but also for travelers. People are drawn to the LOVE letters and choose them as backdrops for special occasions such as engagements, family pictures, new baby pictures and memorable road trips. Further information and images can be found at https://www.virginia.org/love.

The LOVEworks program is a great way for local communities to showcase their unique destination as a way to extend their message. For example, Waynesboro created a ‘river-themed’ LOVEwork displayed in a local park—this was an effort to continue to brand their city as an ideal hub for outdoor recreation. Similarly, Harrisonburg created their own LOVEwork to provide an interactive representation of their community strengths: diverse ethnic backgrounds, rich agriculture, outdoor recreation and cycling, and a vibrant and growing arts scene.

The existing LOVEworks in other localities are made of various materials. Some are painted, printed, or constructed of 3D materials. Use your imagination and your own skills in the design…get creative! And remember that your LOVEwork design needs to reflect the unique qualities of Smithfield & Isle of Wight County.

The competition is open to all ages, residents and non-residents alike. Submit your design in the form of a sketch or digital drawing along with a short description and explanation of your design (including approximate measurements and materials suggested), the location you would like your design displayed and a brief bio of the designer. The tourism bureau has received permission to have locations in both the town and Windsor Castle Park considered for the placement of the LOVEwork, but the final design will need to be approved by Smithfield Town Council and the town’s Board of Historic Review.
