Make some hay while the sun shines…

Believe it or not, the Isle of Wight County Fair is coming up in just a couple weeks (Sept. 17-20). Our award-winning, old-fashioned, genuine county fair is a great way to welcome in the fall season. And if you’re looking for a fun way to get the word out about your organization, business or school, consider entering the Fair’s Hay Bale Contest.

The bales will be very visible to the fair’s 33,000 expected attendees as they will be on display along the entry road from Courthouse Highway to the fairgrounds. Twenty four bales are available on a first-come-first-served basis to businesses, organizations, civic group and schools to decorate.

The bales must reflect the fair’s theme: “A Quick Drive to Boots & Roots.” Prizes will be awarded in each of the four divisions, and a “Community Choice Award” will be awarded based on popular vote.

Decorating will begin on Monday, Sept. 14 at 9:00 a.m., and completed by Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 4:00 p.m. Awards will be announced on Thursday, September 17 at 5:00 p.m., and the Community Choice Award will be announced at the end of the fair on Sunday.

I don’t know about you, but decorating a hay bale sounds like a great fall activity. It’s sure to offer a few good laughs, foster some creativity among the troops, raise some community awareness of your organization, and hey – maybe even win a prize!

Further information and the application can be found at

  1. Hey…there’s even more good reasons to participate in the Hay Bale Contest! The “Community Choice Award” will be determined by popular vote via a collection jar for each contestant at the Information Tent inside the fairgrounds. All funds collected will go towards the construction of permanent restrooms at the Fairgrounds! Plus, the winning entry will have a plaque with their name and year prominently displayed at future fairs.

  2. Hi Kurt! There is no fee involved other than the cost for materials to create your hay bale design. But there are only 24 available. Check out the details online at
